Digtial Literacy Projects

Child Heroes Unit

Fourth grade students in my digital literacy class have been working on an "All About Me" PBL unit within their classrooms. In my class, we have been learning about child heroes, identifying character traits of the heroes, and then creating websites with Adobe's Spark Page app.

First, we learned how to access media tools within Power School Learning. We utilized websites and youtube videos to learn about Malala Yousefzai, Ruby Bridges, and Louis Braille. I also read books to them. The Ducksters website was a great resource for us, giving additional detail.

Once students knew a hero's story, they created a collection of character traits for both protagonists and antagonists and add their favorite one to a wiki project in Power School Learning:

These responses led to a great conversation about strong adjectives, although it was hard for kiddos to resist using "nice" and "mean".
Next week we start creating our websites. Students will use a planning sheet that requires them to cite where they find images, websites and videos. They also need to identify a character trait that their hero has that they themselves are working on.
You can see my Spark Page example here: Dale's Child Hero Website

4th Graders have started the researching process and some have begun their spark page:
Reeves added an image of Malala Yousefsai

Maya is learning how to add a citation to an image
Students used a rubric to score themselves in addition to knowing what was missing from their project.  Then we did a gallery walk, filling in "I like" and "I wish" sticky notes.

Students used the sticky notes to make edits and then we added citations and published:

Malala project                               Caine Monroy project               Louis Braille project
